Scuola del Cuoio” is a leather workshop set in the historic district of Santa Croce, traditionally renowned since the Middle Ages for the intensive tanning activities practiced in the workshops along the banks of the Arno River.
Well-known to be one of Florence’s most acclaimed craft workshops, the “Scuola del Cuoio” was founded after World War II through the collaborative efforts of the Franciscan friars of the Monastery of Santa Croce and the Gori and Casini families, Florentine leather artisans since the 1930’s. Their shared mission was to give orphans of the war a means to learn a practical trade with which to earn a living.

Even today, the heirs of the Gori Family share the same desire as back then to hand down the secrets of the art of tanning and the entirely handcrafted techniques of leather manufacturing, that have remained unchanged over the centuries.
An experienced guide will walk you through the places where fine quality hand-crafted leather products of Florentine tradition come to life.
